Day trippers from Melbourne now prop up a tourist industry with numerous cafés and a few excellent restaurants. There's a variety of shops to explore including an op shop or two, cinema and galleries, supermarket and tourist information centre.
Mt Donna buang
The Rainforest Gallery half way up this iconic mountain is a must see. On a clear day the view from the tower at the top is spectacular. For a few months in winter there's enough snow to build snow men and ride toboggans. Challenging hiking tracks up the mountain get used by people training for Nepalese treks. A trail follows an old aqueduct around the mountain and can be accessed from the top of the property on foot.
With swimming holes dotted along the river there's plenty of room for half the township on warm summer days.
Let us know beforehand and we'll lend you a car tube to float down the river or bring a kayak. There's a few fish about and Upper Yarra Dam at the head of the river has wonderful places for picnics, photography and walking.
