outdoorsy things to do.

Picnic at Upper Yarra Dam

Significant work has been done in recent years building facilities to make this a lovely camping and picnic spot.  A recreation hall provides boiling water, a basic kitchen and tables.  There are accessible toilets, large open grass spaces suitable for ball games, long and short forest walks.

The Yarra River

"Birrarung" to the Wurundjeri people the Yarra is a 5 minute walk from our property.  When temperatures reach 40C many locals can be found at the numerous water holes.  Half way between town and Hazelwood Cottage there is a perfect place to launch a kayak.

Warburton Rail Trail
Lillydale train station to Warburton

40 Kilometres of gravel track starts with a steep climb out of Lillydale.  The rest of the trail is mostly flat making a bee line for Warburton through fields and forests.  This is a really great thing to do.

Mount Donna Buang

Vehicle access to the top is restricted during snow.  A tower on the summit provides excellent views above the tree tops for those fit enough to climb it.  A very steep track from the township to the summit starts near the golf course.

The Rainforest Gallery at the road junction half way up the mountain is absolutely beautiful.  It's a boardwalk with steps but the highlight is a viewing platform in the canopy that's wheelchairaccessible.

Indoorsy things to do.

Badger Creek Rd, Healesville VIC 3777

30 minutes from Hazelwood Cottage and specialising in native animals Healesville Sanctuary makes an excellent day trip.  The 30 hectares of bush is used as more than a Zoo with a hospital team and research facilities that improve our scientific understanding and capabilities around native disease control.

Yarra Vally Chocolaterie and Ice-Creamery
(03) 9730 2777
35 Old Healesville Rd, Yarra Glen VIC 3775

The quality is high and the range is wide.  Brace yourself.

Warburton Tourist Information Centre
(03) 5966 9600
3400 Warburton Hwy, Warburton VIC 3799

Staffed mostly by volunteers "the Water Wheel" is easy to spot when driving through town. There's an eco centre with examples of indigenous flora and fauna.  Local crafts are for sale and it's a good place to pick up brochures and information sheets.
